Yili Apricot Valley, China. Every year, these rolling hills in Xinjiang explode into a puffy sea of pink and white. As the largest groves of apricots in the region, this flowering signifies the beginning of the fruiting season, while also transforming the landscape into something other-worldly.

These “coffee kiss” sculptures are part of an ongoing series by Chinese artist Johnson Tsang. Started in 2002, the series is named after a local drink called Yuanyang, which is made using a mixture of three parts coffee and seven parts Hong Kong-style milk tea to perfectly represent both Eastern and Western cultures.

Infused in the white bead is water from Mount Everest, the highest point on earth. In the black bead, mud from the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth. Separating the two beads are clear beads, representative of the story we all have to tell. Life moves through cycles, find your balance.
